The EDA industry revenue grew 15.3 percent in 2006 to reach $5.274 billion, according to the EDA Consortium's (EDAC) Market Statistics Survey (MSS). This figure includes silicon intellectual property (IP) and may also reflect the addition of participating companies to the MSS.

Bob Gardner, EDA Consortium executive director, said that EDA revenue excluding IP and services was up 14.4 percent in 2006; IP alone was up 21.1 percent; and services were up 9.2 percent.

In terms of specific categories, computer-aided engineering was up 14 percent to $2.190 billion; IC physical design and verification was up 16 percent to $1.396 billion; and pc-board layout was up 14 percent to $391 million. EDA services increased by 9 percent to $308 million.

Silicon IP was up 21 percent to $989 million in 2006. Because large IP companies including ARM and Rambus do not report to EDAC, the MSS expanded in the beginning of 2005 to include IP revenue data from publicly available sources.

By geography, North America was the fastest growing region in 2006. EDA and IP revenue there was $2.589 billion, up 22 percent over 2005. Western European revenue was up 12 percent to $977 million, Japanese revenue was up 3 percent to $1.051 billion, and rest-of-world was up 19 percent to $657 million.

Quarter-to-quarter comparisons were strong as well. Compared to the fourth quarter of 2005, total EDA revenue was up 17 percent to $1.141 billion, total IP revenue was up 31.4 percent to $274.2 million, and total services revenue was up 11.9 percent to $77.1 million.

According to a recent industry forecast from Gary Smith EDA, the EDA industry grew approximately 11 percent in 2006, with worldwide EDA product and maintenance revenue for 2006 around $4.45 billion. That figure does not include silicon IP or services.
