Unlike its first-generation cousin, the BD-P1000, and the soon-to-be-available BD-P1200, which are both steadfast Blu-ray disc supporters, the BD-UP5000, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd's newest high-definition (HD) optical disc player is giving HD DVD a chance. Samsung said that the Duo HD player will fully support both HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc formats along with their interactive technologies, HDi and BD-Java. This means more studio content and interactive features for the consumers.

"As a member of the DVD Forum and contributor to the DVD Industry, we recognize that both HD DVD and BD formats have merits," said Dongsoo Jun, executive VP, digital AV division, Samsung Electronics. "As such, we have decided to market a dual format player. Samsung is flexible to market a stand-alone HD DVD player whenever consumers demand it. Our main concern is not technology but consumer choice."

Many believe that universal players, which can play both HD DVD and Blu-ray formats will hit stores this year. In January, LG unveiled its "Super Multi Blue" player that retails for $1,199.
