The latest China Mobile Phone Industry Chain Report from Research and Markets found that China has the world's largest mobile phone manufacturing base with around 46.9 percent of world's mobile phones made in the country in 2006.

According to the report, around 103 million mobile phones were sold in China's domestic market and 252.2 million were exported. Shenzhen, Tianjin, Beijing and Suzhou have become the important bases for mobile phone manufacturing, and have formed a complete mobile phone industry supply chain, especially Shenzhen.

The mobile phone output is also increasing India. But since India's infrastructure and human resource are not enough compared to China, it poses no threat on the China market, the report said.

The global mobile phone shipment was approximately 970 million units with a production value of about $79 billion in 2006. The market share of the top nine manufacturers reached 90.72 percent with the top five manufacturers taking bulk with 83.88 percent. Nokia ranked first in terms of sales volume, reaching 347.5 million units.

As for the mobile phone platform, the report found that new comers will face big competitive pressure. While it is difficult enough to survive without enough shipment, tier-one manufacturers and platform suppliers working closely together leaves little room for new comers. MediaTek, however, has been fortunate to have two tier-one clients as Samsung and LG, and then ascend to be one of the international first-class mobile phone platform suppliers.

Mobile phone PCB market is still controlled by Taiwan manufacturers and its market share has already exceeded 50 percent and may be over 60 percent by 2007, the report said. In the mobile phone power amplifier sector, RF Micro Devices still controls the market. In the transceiver field, Qualcomm still takes the lead, while NXP posts improvements, and STMicroelectronics holds its firm status under its big clientNokia.

In the built-in memory sector for mobile phones, Spansion lost $90 million in 2006, less than the $285 million in 2005. Intel posted had a huge loss of $552 million. On the other hand, companies that specialize in NAND flash made considerable profit, particularly Samsung and Toshiba. NOR flash manufacturers have to find other ways for survival in the future otherwise, they may be purchased either by private funds or other companies, the report said.

The report also showed that the mobile phone display screen market is falling into successive profit decline. TFT-LCD display screen has dived nearly 100 percent since the second half of 2005 as batches of large-size TFT-LCD manufacturers began to produce small-size display screen. Such a transfer caused a sharp rise in supply and made TFT-LCD mainstream. However, as the resolution of display screen for mobile phone improves further, QVGA may take over as mainstream. But since it will be difficult for manufacturers to again shift from small-size TFT-LCD to QVGA, the price of mobile phone display screen is expected to eventually stabilize and even show a re-rise.
