Class G speaker amp loads more output power

Maxim Integrated Products introduced the MAX9730, a 2.4W, single-supply, mono, Class G speaker amplifier. The MAX9730's Class G architecture and integrated charge-pump power supply enable this device to deliver two times more output power than conventional Class AB or Class D speaker amplifiers provide from a Li-ion battery. The charge pump can deliver up to 500mA over a 2.7-5.5V supply-voltage range, guaranteeing up to 2.4W into an 8-ohm load from a 3.3V supply. The MAX9730 reduces the size and cost of the total solution by eliminating the boost converter and large inductor commonly needed to achieve the same performance; this makes it a good fit for cellphones, notebook computers and other portable applications in which board space is limited.
The MAX9730 maximizes battery life by using a proprietary output stage, which provides efficiency levels greater than Class AB devices, without the EMI penalties commonly associated with Class D amplifiers. Additionally, this device features short circuit and thermal-overload protection, comprehensive click-and-pop suppression, shutdown control and soft-start circuitry. The MAX9730 is fully specified over the -40C to 85C extended temperature range.
The product is available at 80 cents each in 1,000-piece quantities.
