160Gbyte HDD from Samsung

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd has announced its new 160Gbyte hard drive using 2.5-inch disks. Capacity of the single-disk platform ranges between 60Gbytes and 160Gbytes while a dual-disk model, which is under development, will provide up to 250Gbytes of storage space.

The SpinPoint M5 series uses perpendicular magnetic recording technology, and the disk drive design has been optimized to allow ultraprecision adjustment of the head parking ramp position for high-density recording.

"The 2.5-inch hard drive market is registering double-digit annual growth and we expect at least a 20 percent growth increase in 2007," said Hyung Keun Park, executive VP and general manager of Samsung Electronics' storage system division. "With HDDs rapidly moving beyond PCs to include CE, we will provide customers with a new lineup of products with high available capacity and the performance to enable new applications."

The 250Gbyte model yet to follow promises to expand the storage capacity of mobile products, in step with the growth of multimedia content and the changing mobile environment. The weight of the 160Gbyte hard drive has also been reduced by approximately 4 percent from 98.66g to 94.83g, helping manufacturers to lighten their finished products.

The SpinPoint M5 series has been developed to control noise, vibration and power consumption for portable CE. M5 hard drives are 15 percent quieter and use 5 percent less energy than other models with the same storage capacity. The low-noise, low-power features are suitable for notebook PC or tablet PCs users.

The M5 hard drives feature a 5,400rpm spin rate, 1.5Gbps serial ATA interface and 8Mbyte cache memory. Parallel ATA models will be added to the lineup in May.

Test samples of the SpinPoint M5 series have already been shipped to OEM vendors and the company plans to begin its mass production this month.
