FAN5336 boost converter from Fairchild

Fairchild Semiconductor's FAN5336 high-frequency integrated boost converter allows designers to achieve an 87-percent system efficiency, low EMI and board space savings in a wide range of small LCD bias supply and white LED backlight designs.

This 1.5MHz switching boost converter features an output-voltage range of 9-33V and integrates a switching NFET into an ultrathin-profile, molded leadless package (UMLP) that measures only 3-by-3-by-0.6mm. Smaller than SOT-packaged devices typically used in these applications, the FAN5336 offers more functionality including a 1.5A peak current, a 0.2-percent line and load regulation and a 1.5MHz switching frequency. As a result, this device helps minimize noise, heat generation and emissions in cell and smart phones, MP3 players, medical devices and many other portable applications. Additionally, the converter's high frequency allows the use of smaller components, helping designers maximize board space while easing design complexity.

"Designers will find this device especially beneficial in today's small LCD bias supplies and white LED backlight supply applications that require an input range of 2.7-5.5V," said Bruno Kranzen, ultraportable product line director for Fairchild. "In these designs, FAN5336 delivers 87-percent efficiency by providing at least 100mA load current into an output rail set between 9V to 21V, and 50mA current into an output as high as 33V."

In addition to efficiency advantages, the FAN5336 offers features for system reliability including cycle-by-cycle current limit, 1.5A peak current support and soft-start capability. It is available in 6-terminal UMLP and MLP packages. These Pb-free packages meet or exceed the requirements of the joint IPC/JEDEC standard J-STD-020C and are compliant with E.U. regulations in effect.

The device is already available. The MLP version is priced at 86 cents and the UMLP version is priced at 91 cents. Delivery is 6-8 weeks.
