Hitachi files PDP patent infringement suit against LG

Hitachi Ltd, through its Plasma Patent Licensing subsidiary (HPPL), is suing LG Electronics and its U.S. unit, saying the South Korean company infringed its plasma display-related patents.

Hitachi filed the suit in the U.S. District court for Eastern Texas, seeking monetary compensation for damages and a permanent injunction prohibiting LG's plasma display panel (PDP) product sales in the U.S.

The complaint alleges that LG's PDP products infringe seven patents owned by HPPL.

The companies have been talking about an appropriate license agreement and fee for LG' PDP technology and products, but according to Hitachi these discussions have "reached an impasse" because "the parties' evaluations of the patents vastly differ." LG denied the allegation and said it would "react actively" without elaborating.

At the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year in Las Vegas, Hitachi highlighted a 50-inch 1080 HDTV plasma for under $2,500, while LG launched its own 50-inch plasma set in February.

And earlier this month, Hitachi said it aims to increase its global market share for large-sized PDP TVs with the addition of an 85-inch model to its line.
