Keywords:MEMS? MEMS consumer applications? MEMS automotive?

A recent market study from Lyon, France-based Yole Developpement reveals that the global microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) industry reached almost $6 billion in 2006, and is growing at a compound annual growth rate of 14 percent. At the same time, the trend towards more MEMS use in consumer applications and higher volumes in the automotive arena are driving the move from 6-inch to 8-inch wafers.

According to Yole Developpement, most new companies are fabless or "fab-lite," contracting out to existing MEMS- or IC-manufacturing infrastructures.

"MEMS unit prices are decreasing. Pressure on prices is a sign of the maturity of this market," stated Jean Christophe Eloy, CEO and founder of Yole.

The report also provides a description of the business models, the industry structure and latest information on MEMS-market concentration.

In addition to the analysis of the business and industrial evolution of the industry, the report analyzes in detail the top 30 MEMS players worldwide.

According to Yole's report, Texas Instruments ranked first in the top 10 MEMS producers in sales, followed by Hewlett-Packard, Robert Bosch, Lexmark, Seiko Epson, STMicroelectronics, Canon, Freescale, Analog Devices and Denos.
