During the AU Optronics Corp. (AUO) investor conference, company president HB Chen clarified that the company has no plans to establish an eighth-generation (8G) TFT LCD plant in the future, according to a report from Digitimes. Chen, however, confirmed that the AUO plans to move beyond 8G LCD production, though the details and schedule are still under evaluation.

According to Kuen-Yao Lee, chairman and CEO of AUO, the establishment of a next-generation LCD plant depends on how fast the 50-inch class LCD TV market grows. He stressed that the LCD platform still has a long way to go to take up share in the 50-inch class TV market, as rival PDP makers are staying put.

AUO's most advanced LCD plant processes 7.5G substrates, producing 40-, 42- and 46-inch TV panels, focusing on the 40-inch and 42-inch panels, Chen said. The Taiwan panel maker's 7.5G plant began volume production in the Q4 2006 and the company expects to see the plant break even after two and half quarters, said Hsiung Hui, executive VP of AUO. The company also said it will not follow the lead of Samsung and LG.Philips LCD, which began producing LCD monitor panels at their respective 7G and 7.5G plants.
