Samsung Electronics and Apple Inc. are reportedly discussing plans for volume purchase of NAND flash chips that will be used in all iPods and iPhones from June to December 2007.

A Digitimes report cited industry sources saying Apple is requesting for 400-500 million 4Gbit NAND flash chips from Samsung during their recent meeting at Samsung's headquarters in South Korea.

However, industry sources reported that Samsung is not sure if its capacity can meet the demand given that the volume request is 10-15 percent higher than what was agreed earlier. The Digitimes report also mentioned that the memory maker is worried that an oversupply for NAND flash chips may occur if the sales of iPods and iPhones will not be as strong as predicted.

Industry sources reported that Apple is also in talks with Hynix Semiconductor, requesting the memory maker to increase its NAND flash supply in Q3.
