Integrated power modules enhance PDP performance

Keywords:plasma display panels? integrated power modules?

Fairchild Semiconductor has developed the PDP-SPM power modules specifically for driving plasma display panels (PDPs). The integrated modules are said to simplify designs and improve system performance.

The PDP-SPM family consists of two Smart Power Modules: the FVP12030 energy-recovery circuit module and the FVP18030 sustain circuit module. Each PDP-SPM integrates multiple pre-tested HVICs, buffer ICs, IGBTs and diodes into a single thermally enhanced 44-by-26.8mm Mini-DIP package. The FVP12030 module integrates 12 components: two HVICs, two buffer ICs, two IGBTs and six diodes. The FVP18030 integrates eight components: two HVICs, two buffer ICs, two IGBTs and two diodes.

These modules replace as many as 20 discrete devices, allowing designers to use significantly less board space required by discrete approaches while significantly increasing system reliability and enhancing noise immunity, said Fairchild. This integration is also said to improve design productivity and manufacturability as well as optimize driving characteristics.

As an example, the integrated HVICs provide an opto-coupler-less, single-grounded power supply as well as undervoltage lock-out (UVLO) protection to increase reliability, while the buffer ICs offer sufficient current-driving capability for PDP applications, said Fairchild. The modules also use advanced transfer-molded packaging technology to further increase system performance by providing excellent thermal resistance, an isolation voltage of 1500Vrms (for 1min) and low-leakage current.

The PDP-SPM products are available in Pb-free packages that meet or exceed the requirements of the joint IPC/JEDEC standard J-STD-020C and are compliant with European Union regulations now in effect.

The FVP12030IM3LEG1 (energy-recovery circuit module) and FVP18030IM3LSG1 (sustain circuit module) are priced at $15 each, in 1,000-unit quantities. Delivery is 12 weeks ARO.
