Samsung Electronics Inc. is increasing the production capacity of its future LCD plant in Slovakia to help boost its share in the fast-growing market for LCD TVs, according to a Bloomberg report.

Samsung LCD division VP Cho Yeong-duk said the $438 million plant will be capable of producing 12 million LCD panels a year by 2012, up from the originally planned 10 million units. Cho added that the company intents to bolster its share in the LCD market in Europe by 2010 to 30 percent.

Located in Voderady, western Slovakia, the plant is expected to meet the vision of a "Crystal Valley" that will supply the majority of the European market, said Lee Sang-Wan, Samsung LCD division president.

The company is relying on the demand for LCD TVs to fuel the growth of the market as an increasing number of consumers choose to replace glass-tube models with flat panel TVs. The plant is set to create 1,200 jobs and will begin commercial production in March next year with sales expected to gradually rise to around $2 billion by 2010, according to Cho.
