The first quarter was disappointing in terms of graphics chip shipments, but some suppliers have reason to celebrate, namely Intel Corp.

Intel grabbed the lead over Nvidia Corp. in the overall graphics chip market in a lackluster quarter. ''Normally Q1 will be flat or drop a little, this year it was a thud,'' said Jon Peddie, President of Jon Peddie Research, in a statement.

The quarter-to-quarter change was a drop of 5.5 percent, and a gain of 5.3 percent year-to-year to end with 78.8 million graphics chips shipped in Q1 2007, according to the firm.

Desktop graphics came in at 54.8 million, declining 4.8 percent quarter to quarter, and 1.4 percent year-to-year, while the mobile platform, which has been the star performer delivered 23.9 million units, slipping 7.2 percent quarter-to-quarter, and grew a healthy 24.6 percent year-to-year, according to the firm.

The first quarter saw Nvidia replace Intel for the top spot in desktop market share. But Intel grabbed the overall lead in the market.
