Taiwan-based panel makers predict that notebooks featuring widescreen 3D LCD monitors will likely hit the market this year or next. This is according to a Digitimes report which added that U.S.-based notebook vendors are seeking for 3D LCD solutions from Taiwan makers.

Even though the use of 3D panels for notebooks will reduce brightness, increase power consumption and require new software and solution, Taiwan panel makers said the U.S. vendors are still interested in the market to cater to game users. In addition, 3D displays have gained popularity in other applications.

In June 2006, Samsung SDI introduced a 4.3-inch active-matrix OLED display for mobile phones. The South-Korean company has completed developing 3D panels and expects to ship the panels to handset makers in 1H 2007. Samsung SDI estimates the 3D display market to exceed $2 billion in 2010, compared to $300 million in 2007.

Last February, Taiwan's Chi Mei Optoelectronics and U.S.-based Neurok Optics formed a joint venture to develop and market 3D display products for the electronic entertainment market, as well as for commercial and professional visualization applications. The iZ3D JV has two 3D LCD monitor models in the marketthe 22-inch iZ3D widescreen monitor and 17-inch iZ3D monitor.
