Synapse introduced its RF Engine, a wireless module with a range of up to three miles that is used to power Synapse SNAP (Synapse Network Appliance Protocol) and Zigbee wireless networks.

The Synapse RF Engine is a small, low-power, plug-in RF transceiver module that can be used in conjunction with users' own devices or with Synapse's product line. The Synapse RF Engine is available in different configurations: with or without amplification, with an internal (F) antenna or an external SMA antenna, and running SNAP or a full Zigbee stack.

Synapse's RF Engine comes standard with a SNAP network stack. The SNAP stack is a high-performance, low-power, small-memory-footprint protocol. SNAP-based networks are self-forming; it is not necessary to devote time and resources toward developing an applications layer. As soon as a Synapse End Device has been incorporated into the network, the PC-based Synapse Portal software administrator can be used to configure the behavior of the End Device.

Communication with the SNAP-based Synapse RF Engine is through simple serial AT commands, which allows a user to easily interface to the RF Engine by simple techniques. With the Synapse RF Engine handling the wireless control network, users can focus on their application.

Off-the-shelf Synapse RF Engines can be cost-effectively designed into OEMs products without networking knowledge or application layer programming. Synapse's Custom Solutions are also available to customize and integrate Synapse RF Engine technology directly into OEMs systems, which is suitable for large-volume, price-sensitive designs.

The device is now available. Pricing starts at $24 each.
