IBM Corp. and Amazon announced May 8 that they have settled all patent lawsuits between the two companies. The settlement included an undisclosed amount to be paid to IBM and a long-term patent cross licensing agreement.

The mainframe manufacturer sued Amazon in October 2006 for allegedly violating a number of IBM e-commerce patents. In December, Amazon countersued claiming that IBM infringed upon five Amazon patents, which covered technologies related to recommendation systems, search queries and "related product" identifications, according to a report from CNET

Amazon VP of Intellectual Property, Scott Hayden said, "IBM's patent portfolio is the largest and strongest in the IT industry. Our license to its portfolio, and specifically to its Web technology patents, gives us greater freedom to innovate for our customers."

"At IBM, we place a high value on our IP assets and believe this agreement substantiates the value of our portfolio. We're pleased this matter has been resolved through negotiation and licensing. We look forward to a more productive relationship with Amazon in the future," commented Dan Cerutti, IBM general manager of software intellectual property.
