Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd will formally enter the OLED market when it starts rolling out sample panels this year, Reuters reported.

A spokesman said the company has not yet decided whether to go into mass production. "We will first ship samples and see if there is a market for it," he said. A production line capable of producing 20,000 OLED panels would cost $125 million, according to the spokesman. A separate report from the Nikkei financial newspaper said Mitsubishi Heavy is looking to roll out prototypes at its Hiroshima plant as early as this year.

Several companies such as Sony Corp. and Toshiba Corp. are investing in OLED technology because it can produce bright, colorful images without the backlight needed in LCDs, allowing for ultrathin panels. But these high-contrast panels are also more expensive.
