PCB design environment supports high-speed devices

Claiming a significant enhancement of its flagship CR-5000 PCB design environment, Zuken has added support for new high-speed technologies and devices, including DDR memory and high-density FPGAs. Improvements include differential pairs, routing quality and speed and design flow integration.

High-speed differential pairs are essential for DDR design, and Zuken claims improved handling of differential pairs in the new CR-5000 10.0 release. According to the company, differential pairs can now be managed and constrained throughout the design flow by the engineer. Version 10.0 also supports additional topology styles for differential pairs. Zuken's Trunk router, optimized for differential pair design, has also been updated to support full interactive routing of these topologies.

In 2005, Zuken introduced Lightning, a high-speed environment in CR-5000. Version 10.0 of CR-5000 Lightning includes improvements in interactive functionality relating to H-Tree topologies, which promise zero skew routing of bridge and shunt-terminated H-Trees. Designers can also dynamically re-lengthen a net to meet constraints during routing operations. Moreover, existing lengthening blocks in a net are now automatically re-lengthened in preference to adding new blocks.

The CR-5000 10.0 release also promises deeper integration between CR-5000 System Designer, used for design creation, and CR-5000 Board Designer, used for PCB layout. As a result, Zuken claims, CR-5000 Lightning can now be used by engineers as an engineering floorplanning tool. Moreover, support for multiple template copper pour layers has simplified DFM of complex multilayered boards by making it easier to manage multiple copper areas throughout the design flow.

Facilitating adoption of latest buffer technologies, CR-5000 10.0 also supports IBIS 4.2, IBIS terminator models, IBIS series elements and Spice mutual inductance elements. The new release adds features such as smart (automatic) IBIS import, search, and browse facilities. To improve ease of use for simulation, a new "subtract waveform" feature helps users visualize the result of what-if analysis.

For power integrity, the power plane impedance calculation has been enhanced in order to help the user to optimize selection and placement of decoupling capacitors.

CR-5000 10.0 is available this month.
