Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp. (CMO), Taiwan's second-biggest maker of LCD panels, filed a lawsuit in the United States against LG Philips LCD Co. (LPL) for patent infringement, according to a Taipei Times report. CMO claims that LPL illegally used four patent held by Tainan-based company.

According to Loreta Chen, CMO public relations official, this is the first patent suit initiated by the company. CMO filed the complaint in Marshall, Texas, on May 4 alleging that LPL used LCD technologies owned by the Taiwan firm without permission, Chen said.

Chen, however, declined to comment on whether the company was seeking cash compensation.

CMO also announced that April sales increased 35 percent to $529 million from a year earlier, with panel shipments reaching 3.56 million, up 58 percent from a year earlier.

Chen also clarified that CMO has no plans of raising funds overseas to support its TV panel production expansion. The company informed investors last month of plans to ramp up its new 7.5G factory for 40-inch and bigger-size TV panels. The company plans to spend less this year, up to $2.26 billion, on new facilities and equipment, compared with last year's capital expenditure of $3.3 billion.
