200V ICs target low-voltage motor drive apps

International Rectifier has introduced a series of 200V ICs for low- and mid-voltage motor drive applications including power tools, low-voltage servo drives, electric garden equipment, and electric vehicles such as cranes, golf carts and scooters.

The IRS200x family of half-bridge, high-side and low-side driver ICs is tailored for low-voltage (24V, 36V and 48V) and mid-voltage (60V, 80V and 100V) motor drive applications, including both three-phase inverter and half-bridge. Under-voltage lockout (UVLO) protection is a standard feature provided across the family, with the IRS2003 and IRS2004 parts also including deadtime protection. Moreover, the IRS2004 features a shutdown input pin.

The new 200V ICs feature low quiescent current that enables a low-cost bootstrap power supply for the high-side circuitry, eliminating the need for large and expensive auxiliary power supplies that discrete optocoupler- or transformer-based designs typically require, making them suited for low-voltage applications that require a small footprint.

"To meet the demand of lower voltage applications, IR has added these rugged new 200V devices to our 600V and 1,200V HVIC portfolio," said David New, IR's motor control product manager. "When combined with our independent high- and low-side driver ICs, and DirectFET MOSFETs, this cost-effective system solution delivers high power density and low thermal dissipation in a compact footprint to meet the challenges of three-phase, low-voltage motor drive design," he added.

The IRS200x devices come in eight-pin SOIC and DIP packages and feature gate voltage up to 20V, typical turn-on current of 290mA and typical turn-off current of 600mA. The devices accept input logic levels of 3.3V, 5V and 15V. The 200V devices utilize IR's advanced high-voltage IC process, which incorporates next-generation high-voltage level-shifting and termination technology to deliver electrical over-stress protection and higher field reliability.

The IRS200(1,3,4)(S)PBF devices are now available and cost 60 cents each in 100,000-unit quantities. Production orders are available immediately. Prices are subject to change.
