LG.Philips LCD has introduced a 4,096-color electronic paper display equivalent in size to an ISO-standard A4 sheet of paper.

The 14.1-inch e-paper uses electronic ink from E-Ink Corp. and can be viewed from a full 180 even when the display is bent, according to the Korean-Dutch joint venture. Like the 14.1-inch black-and-white flexible display LG.Philips developed a year ago, the color version uses a substrate that arranges TFTs on metal foil rather than glass, allowing the display to recover its original shape after being bent. A color filter coated onto the plastic substrate allows it to display color images.

A proprietary processing technology is said to minimize panel deformation and prevent circuit structure change during high-temperature processes. Both the black-and-white and color displays use power only when the image changes and measure less than 300?m thick. LG.Philips said the images displayed are comparable in quality to printed pages.

"The potential applications for this display will allow our customers to create products that are not only convenient to use but also save natural resources," chief technology officer and executive VP In-Jae Chung said.

A recent report from market research firm Displaybank has projected the flexible-display market to grow into a $5.9 billion market by 2010 and rise to $12 billion by 2015.
