QAM demodulator rolls for China cable TVs

Montage Technology Co. Ltd is ramping up a tuner and demodulator for China's fast-growing DTV market, which is expected to fully switch over from analog by 2010.

The M88DC2000 chip, a QAM demodulator with built-in 10bit ADC, supports 16-, 32-, 64-, 128- and 256-QAM signals and complies with the DVB-C standard and ITU-T J83 recommendation. It integrates a programmable gain amplifier, internal supply regulator and reference generator to reduce external component count. Power consumption is 180mW at 7.2Msymbols/s.

The market is now owned by heavyweights like STMicroelectronics and NXP, but Montage believes digital cable is growing fast enough to accommodate newcomers. The company also argues that it has tuned its chip to handle the idiosyncrasies of China's aging cable network, allowing for cleaner delivery of digital signals.

"Others do products that are suitable for the European standard for DVB. But, in China, the cable network is not as advanced as European networks," said Stephen Tai, president of Montage. "There are a lot of issues in the network, so we designed a product to overcome these hurdles. So for cable operators, they don't need to upgrade their networks."

Tai declined to offer details on how Montage fine-tuned the chip, but the M88DC2000 does offer strong echo mitigation and symbol timing. Also, integrated BER and SNR indicators measure signal quality.
