Samsung Electronics LCD's top honcho has sent out a lukewarm welcome to rival LG.Philips LCD on forming an alliance under the Korea Display Industry Association (KDIA) inaugurated this week, The Korea Herald reported.

Lee Sang-wan, who is also KDIA head, said his company was not too keen on cross-purchasing panels, alluding to LG.Philips LCD CEO Kwon Young-soo's statement at the association's launch that technology cooperation in the 52-inch LCD panel lines should be realized for a mutually beneficial partnership.

"Of course as we launched the display industry association, we are open to the possibility that the two can purchase panels from each other. However, the association will put more focus on developing parts and equipment industries rather than what products can be purchased from each other," Lee told reporters.

South Korea's four leading display makers established the KDIA Monday to cooperate in staving off competition from rival companies in Japan and Taiwan.
