Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. has rolled out a prototype of a 52-inch LCD panel module that uses a glass substrate processed at its eighth-generation (8G) LCD fab scheduled to be completed later this year.

"Sometime in the latter half of next year, people will be able to watch a 52-inch television equipped with this new LCD module at home," said Lee Sang-Wan, president and CEO of the LCD business at Samsung.

S-LCD Corp, the Korean company's joint venture with Sony Corp, is ready to start mass producing the 8G LCD glass substrates (measuring 2,200-by-2,500mm) at its Tangjeong complex from late August. S-LCD is targeting a production run of 50,000 mother-glass substrates per month by yearend. The fab line will mainly be used to produce LCD panels for 52-inch or larger LCD TVs.

A Samsung spokesman said refresh rates for the new 52-inch LCD modules stand at 120Hz, largely reducing the ghost images on the existing LCD panels. The new modules will be used only for full HDTV sets.

S-LCD will be the world's second company to mass produce the 8G LCD glass substrates following Sharp of Japan, which began volume production last August.
