Toshiba Corp. has teamed up with telecom equipment maker Nortel Networks Corp. to jointly develop mobile WiMAX base stations.

The collaboration will make use of Toshiba's HF amplifier and miniaturization technology and Nortel's expertise in OFDM and multiple input, multiple output technologies to make energy-efficient, highly reliable micro base stations.

"The initial focus will be on the joint development of WiMAX products, with Toshiba engineers contributing experience and expertise in radio technologies to Nortel's WiMAX solution," said Shunichi Kimura, who heads the Toshiba division driving the initiative. "In addition to Japan, there are many countries around the world that would benefit from the implementation of WiMAX technology and this cooperative effort will make a significant contribution to bringing WiMAX solutions to these markets quickly and cost effectively."

The alliance "offers a tremendous opportunity to demonstrate how two technology powerhouses can pool innovation to develop new WiMAX products that simplify business in this era of hyperconnectivitywhere anything that would benefit from being connected to the network will be connected," added LG-Nortel chairman Peter MacKinnon, who is also general manager at Nortel WiMAX and Wireless Mesh.

The two companies tested next-generation wireless services using WiMAX solutions in northern Japan last year.

Unlike WLAN, WiMAX provides anywhere, anytime wireless broadband connectivity to consumers who are increasingly on the go.
