China's Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) this week announced that its chairman Tan Hochen and Microsoft chairman Bill Gates signed a letter of intent on May 15 to form a strategic alliance.

This is according to a Digitimes report, which stated that the alliance will cover four areas: digital life, services for small- and medium-sized Taiwan-based businesses operating in Taiwan and China, new-generation operations systems and software (NGOSS), and public-benefit projects for decreasing the digital gap between urban and remote areas in Taiwan.

CHT is testing Microsoft's IPTV (MSTV) platform for its multimedia on demand (MOD) operation and will launch trial runs with 10,000 test users in June. The telecom company has adopted open multimedia platform developed by Alcatel-Lucent for its MOD operation, but will determine whether to shift to the MSTV platform after the results of the test become available in August of this year.

CHT will integrate its FTTx and HiNet (the largest ISP in Taiwan) with Microsoft technologies in home communication, home office, digital entertainment and home control. CHT will also incorporate Microsoft Dynamics solutions with its operating resources to offer services for small-and medium-sizes enterprises (SME) in Taiwan. Successful operations will then extend to Taiwan-based SMEs in China and even in other countries.

In turn, Microsoft and its partners will continue to provide software and tools to help CHT develop NGOSS tailored for its operation. Microsoft Taiwan and its partners will also donate software products for CHT to provide digital application services for handicapped persons and students elementary schools in remote locations.
