LCD display with 230Kbit DRAM from NEC

NEC Corp. has pulled the wraps off a system-on-glass display. The Tokyo firm's NEC LCD Technologies unit helped developed the state-of-the-art display, which integrates on a 230Kbit DRAM frame memory along with display transistors and peripheral circuits. Using a 2 ?m process, NEC engineers fabricated low-temperature polysilicon TFTs with 100cm?/Vs electron mobility into a 400,000-gate DRAM memory. Also integrated were peripheral circuits, including gate drivers, a DC/DC converter, a DAC and memory controllers together with display cells. The circuits occupy almost the same area as the 1.1-inch display.

NEC researchers next intend to shrink the current process rule to reduce the circuit area while integrating all circuits. That would allow them to directly connect the display panel to the bus on a system microprocessor.
