China STB makers face DVB-T patent fees in Europe

It seems patent fees are fast becoming a big headache for China tech companies who ship products to Europe, according to a CCID Consulting report.

The research firm cited recent actions by a DVB-T consortium, the European MPEG-2 Alliance, demanding that several digital TV companies pay a large export toll or risk patent infringement violations.

The alliance, which owns core technology patents in STBs, has already sent lawyers' letters to Digital Video Networks, Changhong, Skyworth, Coship and Konka. The letters state that a fee of $2.50 for applying DVB-T technology will be charged on each STB made all the way back to 2000, CCID said.

The consulting house said the European alliance may have been closely paying attention to China's STB industry ever since the country's digital TV ground transmission standard was finalized.

CCID analysts said China manufacturers must adopt strategies to respond to the threat of patent fee charges. These include forming their own consortium to collectively engage the European MPEG-2 Alliance in active negotiations, stepping up core technology development efforts and working towards establishing a third-party company to conduct research on intellectual property, as well as fully entering the fields of standards and patents.
