Sony Corp. released May 25 a video of its new 2.5-inch display that's 0.3mm thick and bends in a human hand, according to an AP report.

The flexible display combines Sony's organic TFT, required to make flexible displays, and organic electroluminescent display. The company, however, said it is yet to decide on which commercial products the display breakthrough will be applied.

Sony spokesman Chisato Kitsukawa said that in the future, displays could even get wrapped around a lamppost, someone's wrist, worn like clothing or be put up like wall paper.

However, engineering and computer science professor at Nagoya University, Tatsuo Mori, countered that creating said breakthroughs would still encounter difficulties including making the displays bigger, ensuring durability and cutting costs. He added that the display's pliancy is difficult to apply on LCDs and and PDPsthe main display technologies in the market.

Other display firms including LG. Philips LCD and Seiko Epson, are working on a different kind of "electronic paper" technology. However, Sony claims that the organic electroluminescent display provides better color images and is more suited for video.
