Power switches improve system reliability

Fairchild's Green FPS e-Series

Fairchild Semiconductor introduces the Green FPS e-Series, a new family of Fairchild Power Switch (FPS) products that provide high energy efficiency and system reliability in DVD player, STB, LCD monitor and other 25W and lower power supply designs.

Based on Fairchild's proprietary valley switching technique, the Green FPS products raise power conversion efficiency by 1 percent and reduce EMI up to 5dB compared to conventional hard-switch converter topologies. These highly integrated FPS devices combine the functionality of a fully avalanche-rated SenseFET, a current mode PWM IC and various protection functions, simplifying design and improving system reliability. Utilizing advanced burst mode operation, the Green FPS e-Series devices meet standby power regulations by reducing standby power consumption to below 0.2W at no load conditions (below 1W at 0.5W load).

"The Green FPS e-Series devices offer designers the advantages of PWM IC and MOSFET integration together with high energy efficiency and reliability, helping them meet the demanding power consumption and energy regulations affecting today's power supply market," said HK Kim, Fairchild's VP of the power conversion product line at Fairchild.

By employing an advanced control technique, the Green FPS e-Series products allow power converters to operate with narrow frequency variation while maintaining valley switching operation. Valley switching operation enables the MOSFET to turn on with minimum drain voltage and offers inherent frequency modulation resulting in the reduction in EMI noise by up to 5dB compared to conventional hard-switch converters. This valley switching operation also enables the converters to perform soft switching, thus increasing power conversion efficiency by 1 percent while drastically reducing heat generation.

Designs employing Green FPS e-Series products can provide high system reliability and space benefits compared to discrete MOSFET/controllers, RCC switching converters, or conventional hard-switching solutions due to space saving 8 lead DIP and 8 lead LSOP packaging and the inclusion of various protection circuitry, said the company. This circuitry includes over-voltage protection, over-load protection, abnormal over-current protection and thermal shutdown protection. Additional features include an integrated fixed oscillator, under-voltage lock out, optimized blanking and gate turn-on/turn-off driver, as well as temperature compensated precision current sources for loop compensation.

The series meets the requirements of the joint IPC/JEDEC standard J-STD-020C and are compliant with EU regulations.

The series includes FSQ0165RN, FSQ0265RN, FSQ0365RN, which are priced at 84 cents, 95 cents and $1.01, respectively. Other parts in the series are FSQ311 and FSQ321, which are both priced at 67 cents each. All parts are all housed in 8DIP/8LSOP packages. Samples are available now. Delivery is 8 weeks ARO.
