Advanced Micro Devices Inc. has chosen foundry partner Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd's 65nm process for its GPU product line, the fab headquartered in Hsinchu announced.

"TSMC's 65nm process is a proven technology that delivers exceptional performance for our high-end GPUs while providing low power and high density for our notebook, multimedia and handheld graphics solutions," AMD president and COO Dirk Meyer was quoted as saying.

According to TSMC, its 65nm process technologies provide essential capabilities for graphics processors, including high-speed, outstanding thermal characteristics and ample bandwidth for overclocking. Its 65nm design ecosystem also provides companies with a rapid, reliable path to market launch, TSMC said.

The TSMC announcement came as it marked its two millionth wafer shipment to the Sunnyvale firm's Visual and Media Businesses (formerly ATI) in less than a decade, an important milestone in the transpacific partnership.

"Our long experience working with the graphics technology of AMD, obtained as a result of its recent acquisition of ATI, will help us take full advantage of the proven capabilities of our 65nm process in supporting AMD's broad lineup of GPU solutions," said TSMC president and CEO Dr. Rick Tsai.
