Samsung allots $1B for memory IC production upgrade

Samsung Electronics announced May 28 that it would invest $1.01 billion to upgrade its memory chip production lines, according to a Reuters report.

The company's filing in the Korea Exchange stated that the amount will be spent to refine its memory chip production process as well as boost productivity this year. No other detail was provided.

Last week, the South Korean company, along with partners IBM, Chartered Semiconductor, Infineon and Freescale, announced the extension of their chip development pact to the 32nm node.
