Let the countdown begin.

Apple Inc. will start selling in the U.S. the much-awaited iPhone on June 29, announcing the date on Sunday (June 3), via three TV ads heralding the gadget's large touchscreen and functionality to watch video, playback music and display photos. The announcement ends widespread expectation by analysts that the iPhone launch will coincide with Apple's World Wide Developer Conference in San Francisco, where CEO Steve Jobs is scheduled to deliver his keynote on June 11.

As for iPhone's European and Asian release, Apple has yet to announce specific dates. Earlier announcement, however, noted iPhone will be available in Europe late in 2007 and in Asia in 2008.

The iPhone will be available in two versions; in a 4GByte model priced at $499 and in an 8Gbyte model for $599, without the accompanying phone contract from AT&T, which is the exclusive carrier of the much-talked about device for the next two years.

According to Randall Stephenson, AT&T chief operating officer, over 1 million customers said they would buy an iPhone once it is available. A Markitecture survey, revealed otherwise, which showed that the iPhone hype is not enough to make people buy.

Jobs unveiled the iPhone in January during the annual Macworld conference in San Francisco. "iPhone is a revolutionary and magical product that is literally five years ahead of any other mobile phone," remarked Jobs.
