Hong Kong viewers would be able to enjoy high-definition TV programs via digital terrestrial TV as early as this year following the government's adoption of a technical benchmark for the special administrative region's digital terrestrial TV service.

The service will be deployed in stages, with 50 percent of the territory expected to be covered by terrestrial DTV signals by the yearend launch.

The Office of the Telecommunications Authority approved the so-called National Standard on Monday, reported. The technical specification for DTV receivers will be published later this month, said Danny Lau, the authority's assistant director.

Manufacturers need the receiver specifications to produce and supply the appropriate STBs and integrated TV sets for the local market.

The authority said Asia Television and Television Broadcasts, the top two broadcasters in Hong Kong, would simulcast both digital and analog terrestrial TV by year's end, with analog broadcasting targeted to cease in 2012.
