Nintendo's MEMS-enabled Wii is the clear winner in the console war, at least insofar as sales performance is concerned.

Sony Corp. has little to smile about despite its record-high sales of $68.8 billion in the last fiscal yearwhich enabled it to snag a spot in IC Insights' top 10 chipmakers listas Nintendo Co.'s Wii game console outsold PS3 by more than five times in Japan last month, according to a Reuters report.

These latest market results reportedly fueled doubts over the Playstation maker's earnings recovery. Moreover, the Wii also topped the sales charts in the United States for the fourth month in a row, with 360,000 units sold in April. Sony, on the other hand, sold 82,000 units of PS3 while Microsoft Corp. sold 174,000 Xbox 360 machines.

The company reported last month that its game business grew 6 percent in the last fiscal year to $8.8 billion, but also disclosed that the business suffered a $1.9 billion operating loss . Sony produced and shipped 5.5 million units of PS3 in the previous fiscal year, 500,000 units less of the 6 million it targeted to ship.

Perhaps in a bid to offset its losses, the company announced it will invest about $495 million in Sony Semiconductor Kyushu Corp.'s Kumamoto Technology Center Fab 2 facility to extend clean room facilities by 5,000m? and strengthen its image sensor fabrication capacity.

According to Sony's announcement, the company is now eyeing image sensors as focus of its semiconductor business. Strong demand for cellphones and digital cameras has propelled the same for imaging devices, particularly CMOS sensors. The investment is will take effect from fiscal year 2007 to 2009.
