NXP, Afa hatch portable TV solution

NXP Semiconductors and Afa Technologies Inc. plan to develop ultralow power digital video broadcasting-terrestrial (DVB-T) front-end solutions for portable devices. The chipmaker and the Taiwan-based design house launched their first collaborative platform, the DB216, at Computex Taiwan last week.

The DB216 seeks to deliver a low cost, low power solution for high-quality TV viewing by making use of Afa's AF9035 demodulator and NXP's TDA18291 silicon tuner. Its front-end boasts an industry-low power consumption of "The growing demand for anytime, anywhere TV needs to be fulfilled with highly efficient, quality viewing on a plethora of devices and the DB216 is the first of a series of concerted steps by NXP and Afa to lend our customers greater flexibility when designing portable viewing devices," said Philip Sun, executive vice president of Afa.

Added Robert Murray, a marketing director at NXP, "The new DVB-T front-end platforms reinforce the integration of digital TV reception, making it a real and affordable feature for OEMs and consumers alike."
