Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (Hitachi GST) announces the launch of its Travelstar 5K250 hard disk drive (HDD) with a quarter terabyte capacity.

The 5,400RPM 2.5-inch drive is targeted for notebook PCs, external storage devices, gaming consoles and other mobile devices.

Premium features
The Travelstar 5K250 HDD offers maximum sustained data rate of 665Mbps and 1.8W R/W power and the 0.55W low power idle means longer battery life for more "unplugged" notebook time. It also offers a host of features including 400G shock protection, quiet acoustics and optional bulk data encryption for hard-drive level data security.

The Travelstar 5K250 HDD offers 56 percent more capacity, a 23 percent shock improvement and an 8 percent overall application performance boost over its predecessor, Travelstar 5K160. According to the PCMark05 Benchmark, the Travelstar 5K250 drive offers 10-25 percent faster application performance than competing 5,400RPM drives.

The 5K250 uses perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology, which builds upon the successful debut of the Travelstar 5K160 hard drives.

Hitachi will also offer an enhanced-availability version, the E5K250, which is designed for applications needing around-the-clock access in lower transaction environments, such as blade servers, network routers, POS terminals and video surveillance systems.

Technical specs
The Travelstar 5K250 & E5K250 are available in densities of 80/120/160/250Gbytes and in 1/1/2/2 glass disk platter configurations. The HDD is about 9.5mm in height and boasts of 205 billion bits per square inch maximum areal density. The disks offer 5.5ms average latency and 11ms average read time.

The HDDs also offer Serial ATA (SATA) 1.5Gbps, 1.5Gbps encrypted, 3Gbps and SATA 3Gbps (E5K250). Weight ranges from 95-102g with 2.4bels typical idle acoustics and 2.6bels typical operational acoustics.
