IC Insights forecasts that, for the first time, cellphone unit volume shipments will total to more than 1 billion in 2007. This outlook and more is included in the latest McClean ReportA Complete Analysis and Forecast of the Integrated Circuit Industry.

According to the report, the IC industry had a consistent excellent five-year CARG of 12 percent, with automotive, consumer and compute IC markers displaying 10 to 13 percent CARG from 2001-2006. However, the most notable CAGR over the past five years is the 22 percent growth rate displayed by the cellphone IC market.

Cellphone unit shipments, revenue, and ASP for 2007 are forecast to be +10, +3, and -6 percent, respectively.

Finnish handset maker Nokia Corp. will still lead cellphone sales, and is expected to ship over 400 million handsets this year. Due to its high ASPs, Sony Ericsson is forecast to record higher revenues than Samsung Electronics this year, with cellphone shipments expected to surge at least 40 percent.

Nokia, Sony Ericsson, and Samsung are expected to each gain 2 points of cellphone unit shipment market share this year, while Motorola is forecast to lose 4 points of market share.
