Due to slower-than-expected sales in the United States, Toshiba Corp. has lowered the sales target for its high-definition (HD) DVD players by 44 percent, according to a Reuters report.

A Toshiba executive disclosed that the company now aims to sell 1 million of the optical disc players and recorders in by the end of 2007, down 44 percent from its previous 1.8 million unit sales target.

The Japanese electronics firm's HD DVD technology competes with Blu-ray, promoted by Sony and Matsushita Electric, in a high-stakes DVD format war that has split the electronics industry and had consumers hesitate about buying DVD players.

Toshiba announced last week plans to put drives for HD DVDs on all its laptop computers next year, in a bid to win the next-generation DVD format battle.
