Promising relief for bandwidth-constrained professional broadcast and video applications, LSI Logic Corp. has introduced a high-definition MPEG-2-to-H.264 transcoder chip. The LSI DX-1710 can transcode one high-definition or multiple standard-definition video streams in real-time, offering providers of satellite and IPTV service a way to convert MPEG-2 content into H.264 content for delivery.

The DX-1710 is the second member of the Domino[X] Pro family. Last April, LSI Logic rolled out the DX-1810, a real-time encoder supporting 1,080p60, the highest-resolution HD format, as well as H.264, MPEG-2 and VC-1 compression. Bob Saffari, senior director of marketing and business development for advanced video products, said he expects companies to bring products based on the Domino[X] Pro family to market next year.

According to LSI Logic, the DX-1710 platform performs 250 billion operations per second and can transcode one channel of HD video (or two SD streams simultaneously) from MPEG-2 to H.264 in real-time using a low bit rate with almost no change to video quality.

Saffari said the Domino[X] Pro architecture enables the new devices to perform multiformat, single-pass HD encoding. The family supports full HD content authoring for HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc DVD formats, he said. Future family members will support emerging business models, such as transcoding for mobile TV applications and TV delivery to cellphones, as well as transcoding for DVD "download and burn" kiosks.

Scalable platform encodes A/V. DX-1810 handles H.264, MPEG-2 and VC1 standards, plus popular audio codecs.
