Asahi Kasei EMD Corp. launches the first ever AV-SCART switch with dual RGB outputs. The AK4708 part is fully compatible with the European SCART standard and is suitable for next-generation DTV products, including STBs, digital video recorders, personal video recorders and DTV sets. The new chip is latest addition to the company's Audio4home range.

The AKMTM series of European SCART standard AV-SCART SwitchesAK4702, AK4704, AK4705, AK4706 and AK4707 are already adopted in the market and are used in STB systems.

While a conventional AV-SCART switch can output composite (CBVS) and S-Video (Y/C) signals to the VCR SCART port, demand is now strong for high-resolution video recording by DVD recorders through a VCR SCART port. AK4708 meets this demand by supporting bidirectional RGB signals directly to this port.

The AK4708 audio block allows either single-ended or differential connectivity from an audio DAC which is typically located within the core AV decoder chip. The AK4708 audio block is very flexible, having two built-in volume controls offering ranges of -6dB to 12dB and 6B to -60dB. Moreover, the video block contains a clamp circuit, video filters, video switches and output 75 video drivers, thus minimizing external components.

Like other products in the AV-SCART switch family, AK4708 features a built-in automatic power saving function that virtually eliminates the need for standby power when no video signals are present. When a video signal is received, AK4708 automatically switches to loop mode to maintain low system power consumption and eliminating the requirement for external processor intervention.

The European SCART compatible Fast/Slow Blanking control function makes the AK4708 ideal for the full spectrum of European digital AV products.

AK4708 is available in a 48-pin LQFP package. Evaluation boards and samples are available now.
