Motorola blade taps Cavium multicore

Motorola Inc. has adopted Cavium Networks Inc.'s Octeon multicore processor for its new Advanced Telecom Computing Architecture (ATCA) blade for 10Gbit packet processing. The ATCA-3901, based on the 16-core Octeon and Wind River Systems Inc.'s Platform for Network Equipment Linux Edition software suite, permits packet processing tasks such as security functions and packet inspection.

While Octeon began design wins in security-specific applications, its base has expanded to a range of deep-packet inspection duties. Motorola's director of marketing for embedded computing, Jorge Magalhaes, cited Octeon's combined control-plane and data path capabilities as important factors in choosing the processor.
