6Gbps RoC solution supports SAS 2.0, PCIe 2.0

PMC-Sierra's PM8010 SRC

PMC-Sierra Inc. today announced the PM8010 SRC 8x6G, the industry's first 6Gbps RAID-on-Chip (RoC) controller for next generation server architectures, specifically targeted at the x86 volume server segment.

The SRC 8x6G's RoCstar architecture harnesses the full throughput of SAS 2.0 and PCIe 2.0, more than doubling the performance of existing solutions and enabling a new class of enterprise servers. The SRC 8x6G, together with PMC-Sierra's maxSAS expanders and mux, provides a complete server storage chip set solution. Supporting PCIe 2.0, the chip doubles the host bus interface bandwidth to 5Gbps and improves power management, diagnostics and virtualization capabilities.

The device's RoCstar architecture efficiently interconnects all device subsystems, eliminating internal bottlenecks and resource contentions that have plagued today's shared-bus solutions. By enabling simultaneous access to all chip resources, RoCstar technology improves system performance by increasing I/O throughput and lowering latency.

The SRC 8x6G is the first RAID solution to integrate the latest in host, drive and memory interface standards with RAID hardware acceleration and an advanced processor subsystem.

The device integrates numerous other advanced features, including 8 port SAS 2.0 controller compatible with 6/3/1.5Gbps SAS/Serial ATA and 8 lane PCIe 2.0 host interface (full duplex 2.5/5Gbps per lane). It also integrates a DDR2-800 memory controller, a MIPS-based multiprocessor subsystem, a block DMA engine and hardware XOR and Reed-Solomon Engines for RAID 5 and 6 acceleration.

The PM8010 maxSAS SRC 8x6G and evaluation boards are available now to select partners.
