S1R72H74 ATA chip

Seiko Epson Corp. took the wraps off its S1R72H74 ATA controller LSI designed for use in products with built-in hard disk drives.

Epson already offers two controller LSI productsthe S1R72V03 and the S1R72V05which combine high-speed USB 2.0 and ATA functions. The new S1R72H74 ATA controller LSI supports and specializes in ATA/ATAPI-6 and is geared toward built-in devices. It also supports a guaranteed operating temperature range from -40C to 85C.

With the S1R72H74, data can be transmitted back and forth between the main CPU and the hard disk. The package, pin configuration and software are all compatible with the S1R72V03, Epson's single-chip product combining high-speed USB 2.0 device and ATA controller functions. As a result, the S1R72H74 allows continued use of existing resources such as boards and software with USB function. Support for vehicle installation quality is also planned, making it a suitable choice for car navigation systems with built-in hard disks.

S1R72H74 is compatible with 16bit and 8bit general CPU interface, while featuring DMA 2-channel (multiword procedure) and Big-Endian (includes bus swap function for supporting Little-Endian CPUs). Voltage change of interface is also possible, 1.8V or 3.3V.

The chip's IDE Interface is compatible with ATA/ATAPI-6 and features PIO mode 0-4, Multiword DMA and UDMA mode 0-5.

The device has a clock input of 12MHz, 24MHz, crystal oscillator compatibility (1M internal feedback resistor and oscillator circuit). In terms of power supply voltage, it offers three voltage systems: 1.8V/3.3V (CPU I/F), 3.3V (IDE I/F), and 1.8 V(core).

The chips are housed in QFP 128-pin (14-by-14 mm, 0.4mm pitch. Shipment of samples began this month.
