Surface-mountable CW laser is ultracompact

At last week's Laser Fair 2007 World of Photonics, Osram Opto Semiconductors took the warps off what it claims to be the world's smallest and first SMT high-power laser for continuous wave (CW) mode. The laser is dustproof, powerful and cost-effective, making it suitable for volume applications in industrial, automotive and medical systems.

The tiny 2.5mm-high laser has a footprint of only 6-by-4.5mm. The dustproof, electrically insulated package offers a small thermal resistance of just about 2.5K/W. This tiny unit is designed for an output of up to 6W and emits light at a wavelength of 810nm. A prism directs the light so that the laser emits all its light upwards. It can thus be placed anywhere on a circuit board, not just at the edge. Its base has good thermal conductivity so if it is soldered directly on a metal core board its heat loss can be removed with extreme efficiently.

As an SMT component, the laser is compatible with modern production processes such as reflow soldering. It is capable of withstanding harsh ambient conditions in industrial applications and in automobile environments. Its operating temperature ranges from -40C to 100C. The fact that it can be surface mounted makes it suitable for volume applications such as night vision systems, CCTV, traffic monitoring and medical applications such as epilation. An external beam expander can be used to protect the eyes.

The world's smallest and first surface mountable high-power laser for CW mode emits with a wavelength of 810nm. Osram tipped that 940nm and 980nm versions are planned later.
