A few days shy of the Apple iPhone's release, reports from German newspaper Handelsblatt stated that supply problems with touchscreen manufacturer Sharp Corp. caused Apple to reshuffle orders for the much-hyped handset displays.

The report connected the Japanese company's supply problems with the low yield in touchscreen production. The mechanical connection between the touchscreen and the protecting glass surface is difficult to handle and caused a high rate of rejections, the paper said, quoting Japanese industry sources.

According to the report, Apple has increased touchscreen orders from German component supplier Balda AG to compensate for the lower-than-expected supply. Balda produces touchscreens through Chinese manufacturer TPK, of which Balda holds slightly less than 50 percent. While Sharp as well as Balda declined to comment, Balda earlier had acknowledged plans to expand the TPK manufacturing line in Xiamen.
