China is set to launch its first ultramobile PC (UMPC) a year from now, according to a report from China Daily. China's first UMPC will be powered by a domestic microprocessor technology, with chip design technologies transferred from Advanced Micro Devices (AMD).

Peking University professor of microelectronics, Cheng Xun disclosed that the first commercialized product?a diskless application server?will be launched in Q1 2008 and the UMPC will come out within a year from now.

PKUnity Microsystems Technology Co. Ltd, backed by the university, demonstrated the prototype computer developed with X86 technologies from AMD and running on Microsoft Windows XP system.

There are two scientific teams in China working on locally developed processors but almost all of them are designed for embedded computers for industrial use and run on the Linux OS. The report quoted Cheng as saying that they will be able to make contributions to lessen the digital divide in China as well as in other developing countries.

Several chip and computer makers have launched UMPCs last year including Intel, Microsoft, Samsung Electronics and Asus.
