Gear up for mobile-ready MEMS microphones

MEMS microphones are smaller and more robust against heat, RF and vibration than today's commonly used electret microphones. While more electret microphones are manually soldered, MEMS' robustness against heat permits fully automated SMT manufacturing. This results not only in easier and cheaper manufacturing, but also greater design freedom and system cost advantages.

Imagine a robust miniature microphone that is a fraction of a size of today's microphones with integrated audio signal processing. Imagine a microphone as an integrated part of a monolithic one-chip phone. The full potential of the new MEMS microphones has yet to evolve. But the first products of this disruptive technology for microphones already show advantages for several applications, especially medium and high-end mobile phones.
