Oki Electric Industry Co. Ltd has announced sampling of its ML2612 family of 16bit audio codec LSIs, which it claims is the smallest in the industry. Using OKI's wafer-level chip-scale package (W-CSP) technology, the company has reduced the device size to 2-by-2.5mm.

Enabling recording and playback with low noise in portable devices, the new family consists of the ML2612, ML2614 and ML2616 devices. These audio codecs can be placed close to the microphone while keeping sound degradation to a minimum. The devices incorporate a microphone amplifier, ADCs, DACs, and a speaker amplifier in the LSI using OKI's W-CSP packaging. This has enabled the size reduction of the audio CODEC LSIs to one-third of conventional LSIs, said Oki.

The audio codec operates at 1.65 V, which enables lower power consumption in portable devices, said Oki. The company also noted through the use of a programmable filter and programmable equalizer the devices also improve recording and playback sound quality in portable devices.

The programmable filter can eliminate specific frequency noise coming from wind or the system when recording, and the programmable equalizer can correct acoustic characteristics such as difficulty in playing back low sound that are typical of small devices, said Oki.

Volume production is expected to start in September.
