Avago Technologies releases two miniature SMT digital color sensors for use in small consumer and portable electronic applications.

Avago's ADJD-S311, which is the smallest in the industry with dimensions of 2.2 mm by 2.2 mm by 0.76 mm, is a CMOS IC with integrated RGB filters that targets designers of portable devices which require higher integration, smaller size and low power consumption. ADJD-S371-QR999 with dimensions of 3.9-by-4.5-by-1.8 mm is the industry's first and smallest reflective digital color sensing module that incorporates a white LED and digital color sensor.

Avago's ADJD-311 and ADJD-S371 digital color sensors are four-channel red, green and blue (RGB) and clear digital color sensors with 10bit resolution which provide designers with easy integration, installation and design flexibilityespecially for those designs where board space is constrained. Some of the target applications for Avago's new device include mobile and consumer products such as mobile phones, PDAs, MP3 players, handheld games, portable color detection and measurement devices, and a range of other small consumer applications.

The small form factor ADJD-S311 four-channel digital sensor comes in a chip scale package (CSP) that enables designers to accommodate more enhancements in the same amount of board space and can lead to further reductions in design and manufacturing costs. ADJD-S371 is a reflective sensor module which incorporates the ADJD-S311 and a white chipLED soldered to the PCB with a separator targets applications that require reflective color sensing.

Both the ADJD-S311 and ADJD-S371 digital color sensors provide all the necessary circuitry to directly interface with a microprocessor using a conventional two-wire serial interface. Moreover, these sensors operate from a 2.5 V supply voltage, providing significantly lower power consumption for portable devices. To make it easy for designers to evaluate and design-in these new miniature color sensors, Avago also offers a complete "plug and play" development kit that interfaces to a personal computer through a USB port. Avago's HDJD-JD07 development kit comes complete with all the tools and software customers need to quickly develop their color sensing and measurement applications. Moreover, the development kit is ideal for use by designers who have little or no prior experience using color sensors for their applications, said Avago.

Key features of the new sensor include fully integrated RGB+Clear digital color sensor, 10bit resolution per channel output, 2.5V supply voltage and an operating temperature of 0C to 70C.

Avago's ADJD-S311 and ADJD-S371 are priced starting at $1.50 and $2.50 respectively in 10,000 piece quantities. The HDJD-JD07 development kits are priced at $515 each.
